city form: public space

Vondelpark was modeled after English landscape traditions, specifically inspired by the parks of London, which are more ‘naturalistic’, with less structured programming (as opposed to the typical park in Paris, which is more ‘formal’ and has defined active and passive areas).http://www.amsterdam.info/parks/vondelpark/city_plate-london.htmlcity_plate-paris.htmlshapeimage_6_link_0shapeimage_6_link_1shapeimage_6_link_2
The park was designed in 1865 by Jan David Zocher, a famous garden designer of his time, and expanded in 1877 by his son Louis Paul Zocher. It is named after the Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel, who wrote the epic ‘Lucifer’ which is sort of a Dutch ‘Paradise Lost’.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joost_van_den_Vondelshapeimage_7_link_0
