Road building was one of the technologies that allowed Rome to expand its Empire so pervasively. Roads facilitated the transport of goods and the movement of men, essential elements in the art of conquest. The first Roman Road, the Appian Way, was built to link Rome to Brindisi on the southern coast of Italy for the purposes of facilitating trade with Greece and the Orient. Via Appia originates from southeast Rome near the baths of Caracalla. Today the Parco dell'Appia Antica conserves the area to protect its heritage. https://romanencyclopedia7b.wikispaces.com/Innovations+-+Roadshttp://www.parcoappiaantica.it/en/default.asp?L1=2http://www.parcoappiaantica.it/en/default.asp?L1=2shapeimage_6_link_0shapeimage_6_link_1shapeimage_6_link_2
