city form: public space

Tivoli is more about amusement, entertainment, shopping, and dining than it is about about park or garden space, though you can find some truly beautiful pockets of Danish garden design amidst the otherwise themed clutter of the park. Opened in 1843, it is the 2nd oldest amusement park in the world (the 1st is also Danish, about 8 miles north of Copenhagen). Tivoli was the inspiration for what is now the most famous amusement park in the world: after his visit Walt Disney immediately decided that Disneyland should imitate its ‘happy & unbuttoned air of relaxed fun.’ Now this blend of commodity culture and public space is ubiquitous, especially in the U.S.—take for example TImes Square in New York and The Grove in Los Angeles. http://www.tivoli.dk/composite-3351.htmhttp://www.denmark.net/denmark-guide/attractions-denmark/dyrehavsbakken.htmlhttp://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneyland/en_US/parks/landing?name=DisneylandParkLandingPagehttp://www.timessquare.com/http://www.thegrovela.com/shapeimage_2_link_0shapeimage_2_link_1shapeimage_2_link_2shapeimage_2_link_3shapeimage_2_link_4
