city form: history/culture

People in Tokyo and Japan in general love to go shopping, so consequently Tokyo has some of the best shopping in the world. In the ever-competitive retail market, architecture has become a tool of high-end brands to attract big spenders. Stores along Omotesando have been designed by some of the most renown architects in the world. The pervasiveness of shopping as a form of cultural experience has been addressed critically in projects such as the Harvard Design School Guide to Shopping, in which Rem Koolhaas states: ‘shopping has infiltrated, colonized, and even replaced, almost every aspect of urban life.’ http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/architecture/all/02950/facts.the_harvard_design_school_guide_to_shopping.htmhttp://www.oma.eu/shapeimage_5_link_0shapeimage_5_link_1
