city form: civil engineering

  1. The Toronto Islands were not always islands but actually a series of continuously moving sand-bars, their shape and shore changing with the seasons and tides. A number of dredging and landfill projects were undertaken to stabilize the islands and  eliminate movement. Toronto City Center Airport was added in  1939.

The original shoreline of Toronto has disappeared, the result of a long period of landfill from the 1850’s to the 1930’s to accommodate the arrival of the railway and expansion of the harbor. The shore’s natural features are virtually non-existent, including surface streams that fed the Bay, which have been buried and channelized as part of the city’s sewer system. Today Toronto Bay consists of a highly urbanized waterfront and the extensive parklands of the Toronto Islands. http://www.waterfrontoronto.ca/index.php?home=truehttp://www.toronto.ca/parks/island/shapeimage_8_link_0shapeimage_8_link_1
