city form: architecture

Completed in 1976, the Centre Pompidou was immediately controversial because of its scale and architectural language, especially relative to the surrounding Paris cityscape of the Marais. A collaboration between Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, the architects pushed the structure, circulation and mechanical systems to the building’s exterior to maximize the flexibility and interactivity of the interior spaces.
Though perhaps now a bit dated, especially relative to the sophistication of the architects’ more recent buildings , the Pompidou continues to rankle—maintaining an ongoing tension between historic fabric and contemporary architectural expression.http://www.centrepompidou.fr/Pompidou/Accueil.nsf/Document/HomePage?OpenDocument&L=1http://www.centrepompidou.fr/pompidou/Communication.nsf/0/B90DF3E7C7F18CAEC1256D970053FA6D?OpenDocument&sessionM=3.1.12&L=2http://rpbw.r.ui-pro.com/http://www.richardrogers.co.uk/rshp_homehttp://www.richardrogers.co.uk/rshp_homeshapeimage_2_link_0shapeimage_2_link_1shapeimage_2_link_2shapeimage_2_link_3shapeimage_2_link_4
