city form: public space

After a dark period of ruin and decay, Rome was revived by the Catholic Church, which was looking for ways to restore the faith of the people in its mission. The most ambitious pope was Sixtus V, whose legacy to Rome was the Baroque planning that created the many piazzas that characterize public space in the city. The piazzas today are mainly tourist destinations, but the people of Rome still make use of the space for special occasions: every Sunday Piazza San Pietro is crowded with the faithful who come to hear the Pope speak; and on holidays such as La Befana on January 6th there are festivals throughout the city, such as the one in Piazza Navona.http://www.keyofsolomon.org/Pope%20Sixtus%20V.phphttp://www.vatican.va/phome_en.htmhttp://www.articlesbase.com/destinations-articles/guide-to-piazza-navona-christmas-market-rome-italy-1117035.htmlshapeimage_3_link_0shapeimage_3_link_1shapeimage_3_link_2
