city form: architecture

An eye-catching building centrally located between Vieux Montréal and Centre-Ville, the Palais des Congrès is essentially a convention center. The colorful glass façade, part of the renovation by Tétreault Dubuc Saia & Associates completed in 2002, is part of a multi-layered architectural composition spanning more than 100 years. Historic buildings dating from 1885 were incorporated into the original design for the Palais by Victor Prus in 1984. convention.htmlhttp://www.arcspace.com/architects/mario_saia/congres/congres.htmlhttp://www.arcspace.com/architects/mario_saia/congres/congres.htmlshapeimage_3_link_0shapeimage_3_link_1shapeimage_3_link_2

Another notable aspect of the building is an interior landscape installation by Claude Cormier. An abstraction of the old growth maple trees prevalent in Vieux Montréal, Lipstick Forest is a series of cast ‘trunks’ that hover between the floor and ceiling on the street level of the building’s northern edge. Cormier also designed the exterior esplanade that links the Palais to the Quartier International and Chinatown.http://www.claudecormier.com/projects/?PHPSESSID=1f03fc8de1ebc9d2a25e3fcd84161a97http://www.claudecormier.com/project/lipstick-forest/http://www.claudecormier.com/project/esplanade-of-the-palais-des-congres/shapeimage_5_link_0shapeimage_5_link_1shapeimage_5_link_2
