The earliest Shinto shrines were made entirely of wood. After the introduction of Buddhism in the sixth century, Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples began to be integrated into the same architectural complex, and the shrine structures became more elaborate under the influence of the grander style of Chinese Buddhist temples. Metal and wood ornaments were often added as decorative motifs, commissioned by the nobility whose family honor was reflected in the magnificence of the building.http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2059.htmlhttp://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/shinto.shtmlshapeimage_5_link_0shapeimage_5_link_1
