city form: architecture

The architecture of Hanoi is eclectic, ranging from ‘traditional’ to ‘colonial’ to ‘Brutalist’, with many ranges and mixes between. Façade elements in particular reflect a hodge-podge of styles, some reflective of Vietnamese culture and environment (bamboo screens, for example), and some adapted from or insisted upon by colonial influences (the Hanoi Opera House is a copy of the Opéra in Paris).
Residential architecture is characterized by an extreme form of façade expression: the tube house. Lots are extruded as a concrete volume with interior courtyards, with the frontage often used for retail. While the sides and back are often left unfinished, the front façade is tricked out with all manner of ornament.http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~ngothanh/VN_architecture.htmhttp://www.vietnam-beauty.com/cities/ha-noi/4-ha-noi/267-hanoi-opera-house.htmlhttp://www.operadeparis.fr/cns11/live/onp/L_Opera/index.php?lang=enhttp://layered.typepad.com/photos/hanoi/29_new_house_tower.htmlshapeimage_6_link_0shapeimage_6_link_1shapeimage_6_link_2shapeimage_6_link_3
