city form: transit

Begun by the Communist government to bring workers from the outlying areas to factories on the periphery of the city, Bucharest’s metro system is fairly spread out and decentralized. The first line opened in 1979 and the system has expanded over time to its current four lines and 45 stations. Metrorex plans to extend the existing lines, upgrade stations, and add more lines. http://www.metrorex.ro/shapeimage_2_link_0
Criticisms of the system include lack of signage, outdated stations, long waits, and lack of adequate service in the downtown area, but the fares are ‘stupidly cheap’, as the local tourist guidebook puts it.http://www.inyourpocket.com/romania/bucharest/The-Bucharest-Metro-at-30-71391f?more=1shapeimage_3_link_0
