Rotterdam is the fourth largest port in the world, and the largest in Europe, where it more than doubles the gross tonnage handled of its nearest competitor (Antwerp). The port area is huge - a typical map of Rotterdam only shows about a sixth of the total port landmass extending to the North Sea.
