convention 10.03.09

city form: architecture

Breaking this convention, the Vancouver Convention Centre West is a composition of building forms, living roofs, and public plazas. It hovers over the water, connecting the original convention center to the east to the waterfront and downtown Vancouver. The collaboration of three firms, DA Architects, MCM Partnership, and LMN Architects, the building incorporates technology at the forefront of sustainable design (for instance using seawater for heating and cooling), and even includes a fish habitat in the underwater foundation system.http://www.vancouverconventioncentre.com/thefacilities/expansion/http://www.da-architects.ca/projects/vancouver-convention-centre/%0Dhttp://www.mcmparchitects.com/commercial.cfm?ProjectID=195http://lmnarchitects.com/work/Vancouver_Convention_Centre_Westshapeimage_3_link_0shapeimage_3_link_1shapeimage_3_link_2shapeimage_3_link_3
Convention centers are usually large cavernous buildings with vast amounts of interior open space in which a large variety and scale of events can be accommodated. They generate revenue for their host city through rental fees and tourism, but usually do not contribute positively to the built environment because of their scale.
