city form: history/culture

Vietnam has been a target of many colonial aspirations and political intrusions, from the Chinese spanning 200BC to 938AD, to the French beginning with missionaries in the 1700s, to the Japanese during WWII, and of course the U.S. during the Vietnam War. The most lasting impact on city form, architecture, and culture came out of the 2nd French colonial period, when Napolean III established French control over Cochinchina.
Da Lat, in the central highlands, was developed by the French as a resort town in the 1890’s to serve as an escape from the heat and humidity of Saigon. Planned by architect and urbanist Ernest Hébrard, today the city is a popular tourist destination and center of agricultural production.http://www.asian-nation.org/colonialism.shtmlhttp://eng.archinform.net/arch/7434.htmhttp://www.vietscape.com/travel/dalat/index.htmlhttp://www.vietscape.com/travel/dalat/index.htmlshapeimage_5_link_0shapeimage_5_link_1shapeimage_5_link_2shapeimage_5_link_3
