Paris has hosted more World’s Fairs than any other city, the most architecturally memorable one occurring in 1889 and symbolized by the Eiffel Tower, which was built for the event. The tallest structure anywhere until 1930, it is still the tallest tower in Paris. What was originally deemed an eyesore by critics has become one of the most recognizable cultural icons in the world. In 1900 the World’s Fair was again held in Paris to celebrate the achievements of the last century and accelerate development into the next. More than 50 million people attended the exhibition, a world record at the time, with the Eiffel Tower again as its centerpiece.
