There is an underwater dam project scheduled for completion in 2011 to try and protect the city from ‘acqua alta’ – high waters. The ‘Mose’ (the Italian for Moses), would consist of 78 hinged flood barriers on the sea bed which would be raised when high tides threaten the city.
