In 1612 Amsterdam was the largest  city in the world due to its role in global trade. As a means of keeping pace with its growth,  the canals were developed as part of the city plan to serve as defense, freight transport, water management, and for the organization of housing for the expanding merchant population.

Visiting the city at the end of the 17th century, Peter the Great was so impressed with the city’s form and civil engineering that he was inspired to return home to Russia and develop Saint Petersburg.st._petersburg.htmlshapeimage_5_link_0
